  • Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca – Plays and Players

Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca directed by Martin Santangelo make a long awaited appearance in Philadelphia at the historic Plays and Players Theatre January 15th-February 2nd.

For over twenty-five years Noche Flamenca has brought to stages world-wide the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms without the use of tricks or gimmicks. All aspects of flamenco- dance, song, and music- are interrelated and given equal weight, creating a true communal spirit within the company – the very heart and soul of flamenco.

Deemed by The New York Times as “one of today’s great dancers of any genre,” Soledad Barrio performs with some of Spain’s most celebrated flamenco artists in Entre Tu y Yo (Between You and Me), an evening-length program of duets, solos, and ensemble works. The program opens with an exploration of the duet form, and builds to a cathartic finale with a semi-improvised solo for Barrio, touching on themes of love, passion, jealousy, and death. “[This is] flamenco puro — the Spanish art stripped to its flammable core” (The Financial Times).

  • Da – Plays and Players

The Irish Heritage Theatre in co-production with Plays & PlayersBy Hugh Leonard

    March 7 – 23

In Da, we meet Charlie, an expatriate writer who has been living in London for many years returns to his childhood home, Dalkey, Dublin County, after his father’s funeral. His father’s ghost appears and  Charlie must confront his relationships with the two father figures in his life: “Da”, his adoptive father, and Drumm, a cynical civil servant who becomes his mentor. This Tony Award winning comedy examines the complexities of fatherhood, family, and the ties that bind. Da has been hailed as “a beguiling play about a son’s need to come to terms with his father and himself….in a class with the best of O’Casey”.

  • The Steward of Christendom – Plays and Players

    Feb 27 – Mar 15

    Written by Sebastian Barry
    Directed by James Schlatter

FEATURING: MONROE BARRICK, JOHN CANNON, PEGGY SMITH, DONOVAN LOCKETT, STEPHANIE IOZZIA, BRITTANY HOLDAHL, DAN MCGLAUGHLIN, JOHN O’DONNELL AND LINCOLN DREW MILLARD.

The Steward of Christendom is a freely imagined portrait of Thomas Dunne, the last superintendent of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Considered by some to be a traitor to Ireland after the War for Independence, Dunne has been confined for seven years at a county home. A broken man, both mentally and physically, he reenacts scenes from his past, taking refuge in the memory of his three daughters and a son who died in World War I. Complex and beautiful, The New York Times hailed the play “MAGNIFICENT…the cool elegiac eye of James Joyce’s the Dead, the bleak absurdity of Beckett’s lost primal characters; the cosmic anger of King Lear.”
