    Written byMARINA CARRDirected by

    PEGGY MECHAM

In Woman and Scarecrow, a passionate woman — mother of eight children and wife to a remorseful husband — now facing death, looks back over her life and asks what could have been. Pathos and bitter humor mix in this powerful play from one of Ireland’s leading dramatists.

“An intensely cerebral play…incased in a twister of impassioned emotional storm the like of which has seldom been seen on a stage. And it is wonderful…Carr writes emotional pain like others, and she surpasses herself in this work.” —The Irish Independent

Simone needs to be seen as a true believer, but the demands to prove herself keep shifting. First there’s a train ride where a box leaks a mysterious red fluid, then she’s tumbled into a harsh, new land with a threatening job interview and an employee work festival that includes wrestling matches, prison cells, and deadly carnival acts, as this darkly humorous interrogation story looks at the cost of maintaining your belief in something no matter how cruel or wrong it becomes.

  • Shelter – Plays and Players

Shelter is the story of a group of artists living together in an abandoned theater, brought together by a shared sense of artistic integrity. It follows their lives as they create prolifically while their dreams and delusions grow wild inside their home. The show explores the value of art, the nature of creation, and the power of physical boundaries to shape our realities. Shelter is presented using an immersive design where the entire theater is transformed into performance space, and the audience, seated on stage and scattered throughout the house, lives among the action.

  • An Evening With Jack Zaferes & Emmett Drueding – Plays and Players

Date: August 18th, 2018. Doors at 7:30pm, music at 8:00pm. Ticket price: $10

    Buy tickets at OvationTix

Join us for a night of musical variety at one of the oldest theaters around Philadelphia, Plays & Players Theatre.

Emmett Drueding is a singer-songwriter and guitarist based in the Mount Airy, Philadelphia. He draws inspiration from array of musicians such as Paul Simon, Miles Davis, Dave Van Ronk, and John Fahey. Drueding has been described as “quite the enigmatic artist, at times he can be described as a singer songwriter, yet this generic term does not at all encompasses the music Drueding is making. He’s been described as ‘country blues rock rock & roll alt-folk americana folk folk punkindie lo-fi indie rock Philadelphia,’ I would say that sounds perfect,” (Echo Call, 2015). Jack Zaferes is a West Philadelphia based musician and composer who has played bass in and with a variety of groups such as Stolen Rhodes, Curtis Cooper, & Underwater Country Club. Zaferes has been working on a collection of atmospheric electric bass driven compositions that includes the support of strings, horns, synthesizers, and a variety of other instruments which pay homage to some of the great cinematic orchestrations as well as to the likes of Weather Report. Be prepared for a night of jazz and experimental composition, you really can’t miss it.
